TRANSGRESSIONS GROUP TREATMENT

Treatment

Overview:
This documentary is about a disabled man who is making a difference to other disabled people, and how his disability does not become an issue regarding the work he does.

Goal/Purpose:
The documentary should spread awareness, inspire and acknowledge how disabled people are actual members of society, and are not always stereotypically dependant. I hope the audience will see how much Geoff Evans’s work is making a change, and transform stereotypical views of disabled people. Furthermore inspire other disabled people to achieve success through what they love participating in.
Structure
·          Introduction to Geoff Evans – Personal life, hobbies, how his disability affects everyday life. The film starts in the lake where Goeff goes fishing. The shots will be focused on showing the environment. We will take advantage of the landscape and the fauna in order to generate a feeling of peace, calm and relax from the audience.  Also, we will be helped by the fact that fishing is a quiet activity –quietness that we will totally respect. Goeffs is going to appear but you cannot see a lot of him, you do not see his face for instance, but as you see a little of him you start thinking of how is he like,  so you start building up his image. In his house, you will meet Goeffs. The camera Is going to shoot Goeff while doing daily stuff and his house, its differences and similarities in comparison with other houses (marking how is or is not adapted to his disability). Meanwhile, the audience could listen to him talking about his hobbies (how he got into fishing, which football club he supports…).  (Location: Geoff Evan’s house, fishing lake)

Below the questions we are going to ask him in the interview:
o   Can you introduce yourself?
o   What are your interests and hobbies?
o   Where did your interest in fishing come from?
o   What inspired you to volunteer?
o   Do you feel your disability limits you?
o   What are the common misconceptions of a disabled person?
o   So what would you say to people who are disabled?
o   How did he find out about `BDAA´?
o   So what do you find satisfying about volunteering?
o   What advice would you give to anyone?

·        Main Body – The main body will be illustrating why Geoff does the type of work he does, and why he is so passionate about it. Also it will include how his disability affects his work life and the relationship with his colleagues and company history. One of his colleague is going to be interviewed and while we watch  some images of Geoeffs in class, we are going to be listening to his colleague talking about him and his working in ‘’bdaa’’.  (Location: Classroom, and office)
·       Resolution – the conclusion will be a summary of all the barriers Geoff deals with on a day-to-day basis, to achieve success. – Narration (cinematography strong use of imagery)
Style of documentary
We have chosen to film this documentary using observational documentary conventions, to really display and comprehend Geoff Evans environment. Observational conventions are as follow, long takes, real people, hand held camera shots and a interaction between the documentary maker and subject. We felt that Geoff’s story is interesting and inspirational, so we do not have to tell the story visually. We can focus more on the cinematography and developing third meanings and correlations between imagery and words.

We will be recording visuals and audio separately, in order to be more creative in the editing stage.

Visual Narrative

I have changed my mind about the documentary we have to make. In the beginning I was interested in film the people who consume and the others who are homeless; to show both parts. Also I needed a main character in my documentary, so I thought it would be easier to focus it on a person who is always spending money all over the time than in one who lives in the streets. Because he is not going to talk me, really, it's really hard to get it.
So here is my visual narrative you have ordered for this week!

Cinematography

Sacha Vierny - Hiroshima mon amour

Hiroshima mon amour is based on a romantic story between the two main characters, a French actress who goes to Japan to make a film and a Japanese man who lives in Hiroshima. The two main facts of the film are the forgetting and the memory with a background of a nuclear war.
During all the film, it appears two different locations, Nevers, the country of origin of the French woman thanks to the one she can show her feelings telling stories which she lived when she was younger; and Hiroshima.

The first fifteen minutes of the film have voice-over and there is a mix of images: some when the atomic bomb exploded and some other permanent shots of the two lovers. Here the colors of the images are so different; when the two lovers appear, the lighting is so dark and it produces warmth. On the other hand, there is more whiteness in the images of the disaster, and it makes the film cooler.

If you watch the film, you can see that many of the scenes are joined by fades, sometimes it's a fade-to-black and others are a fading.
There are many flashbacks during all the film, for example when she is staring at the Japanese man when he is sleeping in the bed, and she suddenly remembers the moment when she saw her first love died.

In the part of the film when appears the consequences of the explosion of the bomb, the shots are permanent and the camera hardly moves. But in the moment that the film shows the radioactive fallout, the shots begin to change; the camera moves, there are many panoramas and some low and high angles.

The fusion between the picture and the sound it's great; the music reflects the horror suffered in Hiroshima and at the same time it mixes the sweet moments.

How this style could help me in my documentary?

After watching this film, I think that images can speak louder than words, because there isn't script in the part of the pictures of the people who suffered the atomic bomb, but you understand the pain and the sadness of the Japanese citizens. Also, I really like the changes of shot by means of fades, further, I have used them. I consider that it's a great idea to show the images in white and cold colors to represent tough feelings and thanks to it, reach the heart of the audience. The mix of permanent shots and in the opposite, the wide range of high angles almost at the end of the film are an important item to keep in mind.

Review of a documentary

Inside Job

The documentary of Charles Ferguson shows the importance of the financial sector up to the point of depend on it. It’s the same case as the United States; the whole world depends on its economy and if the American one falls, the rest also does it.

It begins showing how all the bigwigs of New York were laundering money and ripping off but the fact is that in those days they didn’t realise what were they doing, because they only wanted to earn and earn more money.

What is the result of it? It’s the high unemployment rate, the extreme poverty, and every day there are more people who join in this situation.
